SEAL stands for Spanish Evaluation of Advanced Language.

The SEAL Examination is an online exam offered jointly by SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) and the NSE (National Spanish Examinations).


 The sponsoring organizations of the SEAL Examination are the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española (SIELE), together with its cuatro (4) instituciones titulares: the Instituto Cervantes, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Universidad de Salamanca, and the Universidad de Buenos Aires.


 What does the exam measure?

The SEAL exam measures communication in Spanish in the Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational modes through reading / listening comprehension and written / oral expression and interaction using authentic real-life activities.

How can the results be used?

The results from the SEAL exam may be used to (1) guide instruction and help students to achieve high levels of proficiency and (2) receive the Seal of Biliteracy from participating states.

How do students register for the exam?

Teachers register for the SEAL exam at
