What is the cost of administering the NSE?
  • There are two mandatory costs associated with giving the National Spanish Examinations:
  • (1) cost per teacher and (2) cost per student.
      • Cost per Teacher. There is a $75 cost to each teacher administering the National Spanish Examination. This cost covers administrative expenses associated with each teacher regardless of the number of exams he/she administers such as: mailings, results, etc…. Teachers may only register students who are currently enrolled in their classes. To ensure that students are enrolled in the registering teacher's class, both the NSE national office and chapter coordinators reserve the right to request that each participating teacher submit an official class list signed by an administrator.

NOTE: AATSP members do not have to pay the $75 per teacher cost, as giving the National Spanish Examinations is a benefit of AATSP membership.

Current AATSP members must be in good standing and must have their 2013 AATSP dues paid in order to avoid paying the $75 test administration fee.
  • To join AATSP, visit www.aatsp.org. (Click here for Benefits of Joining AATSP.)

  • Cost per Student. Each school pays a fee per examination to the national office. This fee includes (1) a national portion of $3.00 and (2) an optional chapter portion (between $0.25 and $3.00 per student). Each chapter has a slightly different fee schedule because each chapter recognizes students in a different way (prizes, certificates, awards, banquets, etc.). Student recognition is funded through this chapter fee.

  •

The national fee of $3.00 per student covers:

    • One (1) Online National Spanish Examination
    • Unlimited year long use of the free, online practice exercises and practice examinations
    • Seven (7) sets of percentiles for each student
    • National recognition
    • Printable certificates for students who earn medal placement
    • Eligibility to compete for Global Citizen Scholarships, Junior Travel Awards and Senior Scholarships

The chapter fee covers chapter prizes.

    • (Contact your local coordinator to obtain your chapter's fee schedule and how your local chapter recognizes students.)
  • -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • The following cost MAY apply to some schools/districts.

  • Cost per school / district.  Schools requiring additional forms (such as vendor packets, affidavits, notarized or other legal documents) will be charged an additional processing fee.  The amount of the processing fee is determined by the complexity of the documentation required and is generally between $25 and $50.

NSE is a non-profit organization.  Once all operating expenses have been paid, all funds are returned to the students in the form of prizes and scholarships.  NSE cannot absorb of the cost of completing additional documentation.

NOTE:  All NSE invoices must be paid on time.  Schools requiring extra time to process such documentation need to register with ample time in order for payment to be made before the deadline.  If payment deadlines are not met, then applicable late fees will be charged.

Dear Jesus Garcia,

For security purposes, you are receiving 2 separate emails: (1) usernames and passwords and (2) secret words. If you did not receive both of these emails, first check the SPAM (JUNK) folder of your email program. If the missing email is not there, please email lmikenas@nationalspanishexam.org or contact the NSE support line - (219) 465-2100.

You MUST PRINT OUT three items before administering the National Spanish Exam:
1.  this email which contains USERNAMES and PASSWORDS
2.  the separate e-mail you have received with the subject line: Secret Words
3.  the PDF file at www.quia.com/nse/NSE2012TestAdministrationInstructions.pdf which contains TEST ADMINISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS

The above documents contain instructions you will need both (1) to prepare your computer testing area prior to the testing date and (2) to administer the online National Spanish Examination through Quia.

Both the e-mails and PDF file are confidential. No student should be given access to any of these documents.

Thank you for registering for the National Spanish Exam on Quia! Below is the Quia account information for you and your students. You can go to www.quia.com/web to log into your instructor account and access your students' information.

The National Spanish Exam may be administered anytime during the exam window (March 1, 2012 through April 10, 2012). During this time, it is recommended that exams be administered Monday through Friday, between the hours of 7:00 am and 4:00 pm (Central Time), when technical support will be available. No technical support will be available outside of these days/times. Teachers are encourages to proctor their own students, as doing so eliminates technical and logistical problems.

EXAM PREPARATION - Two (2) items to do BEFORE test administration day

1. At least two weeks before administering the actual exam, we strongly recommend sending Quia's technical requirements (posted at www.quia.com/help/tech/system-requirements.html) to your school's technology department to ensure that your computers are set up correctly for the exam.

2. We also require that you administer the appropriate exam level of the PRACTICE National Spanish Exams at http://www.nationalspanishexam.org/index.php/exam-preparation/past-examinations. This practice exam will test your computer set-up so that any technical issues can be discovered and resolved before test day. The actual online National Spanish Examinations use the same format and technology as the online practice exams. If the practice exams work, then the actual exam will work.

STUDENT ACCOUNT INFORMATION

Below you will find:

1. the list of student accounts
2. additional instructions for adding new students and students no longer taking the exam
3. instructions for changing a student's exam level
4. instructions for providing students with additional exam attempts if necessary (for example, if the power goes out, the Internet connection fails, or the student accidentally submits the exam before completing it)
5. instructions for viewing exam results

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Additional Instructions:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
When you log into your Quia account, the students you registered for the exam appear on the class roster corresponding to the level for which they are registered.

For example, the Level 1 class contains all the students you registered for Level 1, and so on. Each student's username appears on the right-hand side. To see a student's password, click on the lock icon.

-----------------
2. ADDING NEW STUDENTS
If you would like to register additional students to take the exam, follow these steps:

1. Navigate to the appropriate class roster using the Class drop-down menu in the upper left.
2. Type the students' first and last names into the blank rows of the roster.
If you run out of space, click 'Add more rows...' to add additional rows at the bottom.
3. When you have added all the students, click 'Save changes'.
A username and password will be generated for each new student.

If you add any additional students, you must send payment to the NSE national office (2701 Beech St. - Suite P; Valparaiso, IN 46383) for these students BEFORE NSE will release any scores to your school. Please note that adding new students requires that you also pay the $2 late fee per new student registered.

STUDENTS NOT TAKING THE EXAM
If your roster contains students who will no longer be taking the exam, simply ignore their names on the roster. You cannot delete any students' names, and there is no refund for students previously registered.

-----------------
3. CHANGING A STUDENT'S EXAM LEVEL

If you need to change the level for which one of your students is registered, simply add him or her to the roster for the new exam level and ignore the entry for the original exam level. A new username and password will be generated for the student. Be sure that the student uses the new username when taking the exam, so that he/she can access the correct exam.

To add a student to a different level, follow these steps:

-----------------
4. PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH ADDITIONAL ATTEMPTS
Each student may only take the National Spanish Exam once. Students will be automatically barred from taking the exam multiple times. However, if something goes wrong the first time a student takes the test -- for example, if the power goes out, the internet connection fails, or the student accidentally hits the 'Submit' button before completing the test -- you can add attempts for individual students.

NOTE: All teachers should be logged into his/her Quia account BEFORE the students arrive for the test.

To add an attempt for a student, follow these steps:
1. Log into your instructor Quia account.
2. Click the 'Quizzes' link in the upper left corner.
3. Click the folder next to the student's exam level.
4. Click 'Add attempts' next to the exam for which you want to allow an extra attempt (achievement or proficiency).
5. Change the number of attempts to 2 using the drop-down menu labeled 'Attempts' next to the student's name.
6. When you are finished, click 'Done'.

The student will now be able to log in and attempt the exam a second time USING THE SAME USERNAME AND PASSWORD.

----------------
5. VIEWING EXAM RESULTS
After students take the exam, teachers may view exam results by following these steps:
1. Log into your instructor Quia account.
2. Click the 'Quizzes' link in the upper left corner.
3. Click the folder next to the student's exam level.
4. Click the reports icon next to the exam for which you would like to view results.
5. Select your report settings.
6. Click 'View' to view a report of your students' results.

Students may view their own results, including answers and feedback, anytime after May 1, 2012 by logging in with their username and password.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
For non-urgent requests, please contact Quia Support at nse@quia.com.

For requests that require immediate assistance, please contact the NSE Support Line (219) 465-2100. Technical support is available during the test window Monday - Friday from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm (Central Time).

ONLINE EXAMINATIONS

Once a teacher submits his/her registration or updated registration to Quia, the company that hosts NSE’s online exam, the teacher is obligated to pay for the students registered.  Quia automatically charges the NSE a fee to set up that teacher’s online account and to assign a username and password for each teacher registered.  Because NSE is a non-profit organization, we cannot absorb the cost of allowing deletions, partial deletions or of issuing refunds.

No refunds will be issued for any products (Vocabulary and Past Examination CDs) since, once these products have reached the consumer, they can be easily copied onto a computer.
